Working capital management remained a relatively neglected sector of overall management in small enterprises. Many small enterprises generally fail more on account of the inadequacies to properly manage their working capital than for other reasons. The performance of an enterprise is to a large extent dependent on how efficiently the working capital and its components are managed. The study could asses the efficiency or otherwise of the entrepreneurs, in managing their working capital and its components. In the present day context of Indian economy and industrial growth, small enterprise have gained prominence over the years by their significant contribution in terms of exports, industrial growth, small enterprises have gained prominence over the years by their significant contribution in terms of exports, industrial output etc. The latest industrial policy of the Government also throws up challenges for the small enterprises to survive and grow in highly competitive domestic and international markets, on a self-sustaining basis. A close observation of the practices followed by the small enterprises for management of working capital as highlighted in this study would be very useful to the development and financing agencies of the small enterprises and the entrepreneurs concerned.
The study is duly related to the locational characteristic of enterprises comprising the sample, their ownership patterns entrepreneurial background of the people promoting etc. and analyzed the manner in which working capital practices emerge in the sample enterprises.
In the present study, the sample identified comprised of our industrial groups viz., fruit processing, agricultural implements, general engineering workshops, and chemical industries.
Finding and recommendations of the study would be highly beneficial to the officials in Banks, Financial Institutions, and Promotional Agencies in the public and private sector, Consultants, to maximum extent.
The entrepreneurs of small and medium enterprises would find this book of practical use in appropriate estimating their working capital requirements, and be aware of the techniques of managing the various components of working capital of maintain the desirable levels of liquidity and profitability.
This book would also help the graduate and post graduate students of Business Administration, specializing in finance and the researchers pursuing similar studies.

Dr. C. Sitaramayya is the Director, Centre for Industrial Credit & Financial services National Institute of Small Industry Extension Training (An organization of the Ministry of small scale Industries & Agro and Rural Industries, Govt. of India), Yousufguda, Hyderabad. He is a Fellow member of the Institute of Chattered Accountants of India and holds a PhD in Business Management from Osmania University.
