Many developing countries are confronted with the twin imperatives of development and modernization. Each has responded in a distinct manner to these impulses. The underlying premises and perceptions shape public policy. The developing societies in the Muslim world are a part of this wider process.

The Observer Research Foundation, New Delhi, has change in Muslim societies in the neighbourhood of India with objective of identifying the forces at work and the impact they may have on future developments.

About the Author

Mohammad Hamid Ansari is a Distinguished Fellow at Observer  Research Foundation, New Delhi and Visiting Professor at the Academy of Third World Srudies, Jamia Milia Islamia.

He is a former Vice- Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University. He has served as India’s Ambassador to the UAE, Afganistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia, as High Commissioner to Australia and as Permanent Representative to the United Nations. At the moment he is the Vice President of India.
